Kindergarten class years are very fun and colorful years for kids. Children look at everything with curiosity and ask infinite number of questions. They like to hunt for smallest object and are filled with energy. Learning here is very colorful. As a Kindergarten teacher I face this on daily basis. If I introduce anything new to kids, I am bombarded with infinite questions and possibilities. I remember once I tried introducing them to make a chart on digraph flowers and I these little minions started suggesting me that can they make fishes, trees, flowers and houses, rivers beside the flowers I suggested! 😜🀣 that’s how curiosity and imagination comes into play and we got to tackle them with our creativity weapons! I got few weapons to keep our kindergarten kids busy and enchanted at the same time! Kindergarten Literacy Activities 1.Spot the Sight Words You can play many games of Sight Words. Swat the Word I usually play this game with my kindergarten kids. And they love it all the time. You just have Lay out the word cards on a table and call out a word. Let kids swat the correct one with a fly swatter or a hand. Whack a word This is another fun game for kids. Kids can flip a card and whack it if it matches another card on table. Note: Use safe object for whack 😜 Make a word recipe You can make word sandwiches or dishes with sight words. Cut cards into shapes of sandwich ingredients and make a sandwich of the sight words. 2.Alphabet Acitivites Learning alphabet is essential for kindergarten kids. We can make learning alphabets fun and platyful. Here are some creative and effective ideas you can try at home or in a classroom: Tracing letters Tracing letters is one of the best ways for kids to memorize alphabets. It like you pave a way for the future of alphabet learning. Using hands on alphabet tracing worksheets will help kids in long run. Here are our few tracing worksheets that kids will love to scribble on! Alphabet songs Learning with rhymes and songs is one of our daily morning activity for kindergarten class. After our fun morning greetings we sing atleast three songs to warm up our day. And learning alphabets with phonics is part of this activitiy. For example the old time rhyme An old MacDonald had a farm is a awesome way to learn vowels – a, e, i, o, u You can start with the alphabet song and then move on to other rhymes and songs. Alphabet Hop We sometimes play this game outdoors and sometimes indoors. I write letters on the floor (with a chalk and then I call out a letter and kids jump to it. It’s more fun with some good songs in the background. I also improvise this game by setting timer. This is make it more funny and filled with laughter! 🀣🀣✨ 3. Math Activities Math is a subject which can rarely be understood on paper. Kids should understand math with daily life examples and how it helps them in day to day life. I always try to enculcate math in activities. Counting objects Usually I ask kids to count chairs of same color, crayons, apples, flowers, chalks. πŸ–οΈβœοΈπŸͺ‘πŸŒΈπŸŒΊπŸ’πŸŒ»πŸͺ·πŸͺ»πŸŒ· They sure do sometimes miss some numbers but they find it very easy to grasp counting practically. Also I use few counting worksheets for them with lots of activities. Greater and lesser I use blocks, sticks, pencils to play this game. We keep these objects on table and kids recognize which is bigger, greater, smaller or lesser. This helps in comparison of various objects in day to day life. Shape hunt You can ask kids to look around the surroundings and recognise shapes like circle, square, triangle. 4.Science Activities Growing a plant You can use several fast growing plants and ask kids to take care of them. This will make them feel responsible and have empthay towards living things like plants, trees, inscets and animals. My kindergarten kids are very much fascinated by gardening, flowers, plants. This will also develop in them a healthy eating habit. Research says that if kids are involved in gardening they tend to eat healthier food like fruits and vegetables πŸ‰πŸ‰πŸ‡πŸ‡ Color Mixing Magic We love this activitiy because it involved both science and art. You can ask kids to mix colors with water and different paint so that they totally get a new color. We also try hand painting, vegetable painting with this ! Sensory games I use fruits like oranges, tangerine, pineapple, apples, watermelon, grapes and asks kids to describe how they feel, smell, taste and look. They will always come with incorrect colors, incorrect tastes and shapes πŸ€£πŸ˜‚ but I bet this activity is worth it because it will give you opporunity to teach kids about size, shapes, colors and sensory organs. It’s a math, science and english activity all in one! Collecting leaves and flowers I know my kids love colleting flowers and leaves and put stick them in a scrapbook. Its a nature friendly fun activity. Whenever we go for our walks in garden, they enjoy collecting nature like pokemons! They even bring me several flowers and leaves and sticks as gift. ( To be honest I get a flower, a leaf and stick daily early morning in my class). My kindergarten kids love making their teacher happy. We also colect pebbles and compare their size, shape and colors. Kindergarten Art and Craft Activities We often think our kindergarten kids are limited to shapes and lines. And we try to put boundaries with them. Giving them freedom to be artist is the crux of our art acitivities. These activities will help them develop fine motor skill. But also along with giving them freedom to do what they want its important to identify where a student might stuggle and we can create steps to overcome them. Take a look at these impressive art
